Information: Crime and Thriller, 2007
Stars- Samuel L Jackson, Ed Harris, Eva Mendes
Opening conventions- Credits play over the sequence. There is a voice over that plays over the sequence and informs the audience on what’s going. Weird eerie music also plays to help create the atmosphere.
Narrative Function- the story is explained through the voice over who explains his job this introduces the storyline and what the film will be based on and gives the audience background information. It also introduces the main character and shows that the film is going to be based upon him. When the sequence ends the audience realises he was talking to other people about the role in his job, so was a clever way to use a voice over. Aren’t told exactly what the film is going to be about just told about the man’s job.
Characters- although the audience only sees the main character at the end of the sequence we are introduced to his voice from the beginning. He explains his job and the procedure he goes through as he cleans up dead bodies and any remains left. The way he says this is done with humour which lightens the tone and makes the film seem less depressing.
Film Lang- MES, Cinematography, (Light and Sound)- the light used is quite dark to relate to the atmosphere of death its natural lighting on a dark day. The clothes used are plain and dull to show its a serious subject and emphasises the mood. The sound is played from the start and then once the women has dead more uplifting music is played which is ironic and introduces the idea that this film is more light hearted and not depressing.
Film Lang- Movement, framing, Editing and Sound- there are a lot of low levels which make it more interesting to watch. Close ups are used when we see the glasses drenched in blood this is to make the audience focus. The title is used over a long shot and fades in and is effective and clear.
